Brian Markham
Brian started woodturning as a child in his grandfather’s shop. As an adult, he rediscovered the craft and has been turning bowls and platters for over twenty years. Now that he is actively retired and living full time at his former cottage on Rebecca Lake, he has time to fully explore his passion for wood. His spacious, purpose-built studio is filled with a variety of wood species both local and exotic, which he transforms from blocks of wood into beautiful one-of-a-kind serving pieces. He especially loves working with burls, which are growths that appear on the trunks of some tree species. They reveal unique whorling grain patterns when turned on a lathe.
Brian creates pieces for function and display from cherry, maple, mahogany, and from burls of redwood, yellow birch and walnut. The full beauty of the wood is brought out by the lustrous food-safe finish which he has spent years perfecting.
Visit Brian’s wood studio on Rebecca Lake, and learn how these beautiful bowls are made.
