Fourth Annual Art Tour this August
The Artists of the Limberlost fourth annual Open Studio Weekend will be held on August 14 and 15, 2010. Artists of the Limberlost is a collective of artists and craftspeople with studios along the Limberlost Road, 10 minutes east of Huntsville in Muskoka. Visitors to the tour have the opportunity to see how each artist and craftsperson creates their work, from the tools they use to the inspiring settings of their studios. The Artists of the Limberlost members include Brenda Wainman Goulet, bronze sculpture; Susan Higgins, fused & stained glass; Brian Markham, woodturning; Catherine O’Mara, egg tempera painting; Jeff Miller, oil & acrylic painting; Jerry Friedman, driftwood sculpture; and Sharon Stock Feren, mosaic, mixed media & photography. A new member, painter Mark Kulas joins the tour this year.

Mark brings a totally new style of art to the collective. He describes his style as a distillation of his graphic design background, the folk art of his Kashub Polish heritage, and the Woodland Art movement. Thematically, his stylized paintings depict the wildlife and wilderness of the Ottawa Valley, Algonquin Park and Muskoka. For the past few years Mark has shown at the Eclipse Gallery at nearby Deerhurst Resort, and joining the tour introduces his art to many new art lovers. A graphic artist by profession, Mark designed this year’s print ads for Artists of the Limberlost.
In addition to the host studios, guest artists exhibit their work at the different studios. Each year some of the guests are rotated so there is always exciting new work to see on the tour. This year’s new guest artists include a local jeweller, Juliana Plukasz, Wendy Durfey from Rockwood Ontario who creates very sophisticated baskets, Margaret Peter, a printmaker and painter who lives in Guelph, Jim Sanders, a potter from near Wawa, and Julie Waterhouse, a photographer from Markham. Returning guest artists include contemporary furniture maker Cirvan Hamilton, carver Al Brown, jewellery maker Vicki Sharp, photographer Laurel Goodings, metal sculptor Wayne Church, potter Carol-Ann Michaelson, painter Robert McLean, and card maker Mary Dyer. Visit individual studio pages on this website to see a piece from each guest artist. Many have links to their own websites for a fuller impression of their work.

Limberlost Rd. (Muskoka Rd. 8) is about 10 minutes east of Huntsville along Hwy 60. The tour is a scenic 20 kilometre route. Every few minutes visitors will see signs indicating another studio location, and new work to explore. In all there are 21 artists at 8 locations. There is no charge for the tour.

Jeff Miller’s rustic farmhouse studio provides the backdrop for his paintings. He often uses humour, and expresses the uninhibited energy of nature in his exuberant style. Jeff will be joined by Wayne Church from Severn Bridge showing hand forged metal sculpture, and by Jim Sanders who makes functional pottery in his studio on the shore of Lake Superior.

Sharon Stock Feren works in several media. She has many new paintings this year, as well as photographs, prints and mosaic at her Walker Lake studio. Joining her is award winning contemporary basket maker Wendy Durfey, from Rockwood.

Brenda Wainman Goulet will be showing a new collection of bronze and stone jewellery this year as well as her sculpture work. Her guests are painter and printmaker Margaret Peter from Guelph, as well as local jewellery maker Juliana Plukasz.

Catherine O’Mara is a painter working in the ancient medium of egg tempera, and has several new landscapes this year. Joining Catherine are Cirvan Hamilton who makes contemporary fine furniture, and wood carver Al Brown, showing highly realistic birds and fish.

Brian Markham, has been busy turning bowls and platters from local and exotic woods and burls. His guests are potter Carol-Ann Michaelson from Glen Williams Ontario, and watercolour painter Bob McLean.

Mark Kulas is the newest member of Artists of the Limberlost. A resident of Pembroke, Mark works seasonally on his paintings at the family cottage on Bella Lake.
Susan Higgins’s fused and stained glass work expresses themes of nature in bowls, plates and window panels. Jewellery maker Vicki Sharp will exhibit her unique woven bead jewellery, and Laurel Goodings, photography.

Jerry Friedman transforms driftwood into sculpture at his cottage studio. Joining Jerry are local cottager Mary Dyer with her hand coloured note cards of Muskoka scenes, and Markham photographer Julie Waterhouse.

The Artists of the Limberlost invite you to explore, experience and enjoy their special corner of Muskoka, and the art it inspires. It’s a perfect opportunity to find a one of a kind gift, or add a special piece to your own collection. Join them August 14 & 15, from 10 am to 6 pm. Studios may be visited throughout the season by appointment.
